Rev. Donald James Vuurens' Obituary
Rev. Donald James Vuurens, age 82, passed away Saturday, January 10, 2015 in Muskegon. He was born on November 1, 1932 in Holland, MI to Arie and Aubra (Koppenaal) Vuurens. Don was a veteran of the United States Air Force and served in the Korean Conflict. He graduated from Davenport College as a Certified Public Accountant; he received his Bachelor’s Degree in Music and Psychology from Hope College; and he graduated from Western Theological Seminary. Don loved music and could play just about any instrument; he especially enjoyed the baritone and string bass. While in the Air Force, Don was part of a Gospel Airmen Quartet. After college, Don worked as a CPA for 5 years, as a minister in the Reformed Church of America for 10 years, and as a United Methodist Minister for 40 years before his retirement. He was a member of the Holton American Legion and enjoyed hunting and fishing. On June 11, 1953, Don married the former Florence VanDyke in Holland, MI and she survives him along with their daughter, Diana M. Burr; one grandson, Alexander J. Burr and one brother, Walter Vuurens. He was preceded in death by his parents and son-in-law, Robert D. Burr. A MEMORIAL SERVICE will be 3:00 PM Thursday, January 15, 2015 at The Lee Chapel, 6291 S. Harvey St., 231-798-1100 with Rev. John Morse officiating. MILITARY HONORS will be performed by the Holton American Legion. VISITATION will be one hour prior to his service. MEMORIALS may be made to Twin Lake UMC.
