Wilma and I have enjoyed many fun and good experiences with Don and Marie at Kiwanis functions over a 25 year period. Don and Don went to many Kiwanis functions together and Don Bustin was always eager to help in any way he could and always a positive influence on those who served with him. I am thankful that I had the opportunity to talk with him a few days before he passed on to Glory and we treasure the memories of his giving spirit and high level of integrity and service.##imported-begin##Don & Wilma van der Zwaag##imported-end##

About four years ago we were having dinner with Dick and Sue Borgeson, they said they were working on Disaster at Red Cross and wondered if I'd be interested....I said maybe! Next day I got a call from Don, and he said I understand you are interested in Disaster, I said yes. From there we met at RC and he trained me and others in Disaster. He was exacting and expected the best from you. Needless to say, I have grown to enjoy the Disaster service to those people having problems.
My first fire call was with Don, on Wood St. An apartment fire, Don was comforting, caring, reassuring to the young lady that had the fire. He knew the forms, etc very well.
Last Sept. I went to Richmond, VA on a national disaster with about 10 other people from Muskegon. I called Don the day before I left to see how he was doing and told him I know he'd love to be going with us, which he said he sure would. After checking in at national Hdgtrs., a lady came up to me and said your from Muskegon? Yes I said, is Don Bustin here, I said no and that he would love to be but was having some health problems. She said I worked with Don on several disasters and he is a great guy! I said would you like to talk with him....she said...why yes, for some reason I remembered the phone number...798-4235 and called him on my cell phone....you answered Marie, and Don and this lady had a nice talk about old disasters they had worked together on.
Don left not only a mark on the Muskegon Red Cross, but also on the National scene by his hard work and dedication to helping others and always giving his best. I will strive to be half of what he has done for others a for the Red Cross. I miss you Don and appreciate all your hard work.

Where to begin. We moved in almost 19 years ago and little did we know then what wonderful and caring people lived next door. You watched our kids grow into young adults, reintroduced us to the world of camping and left us with so many truly great memories. I’ll always cherish the conversation around the fire at the campground, the “cold one” on the front porch and never ending banter we seemed to do so well. Putting up the Christmas lights won’t be quite the same not having to race you to get it done first. A couple of weeks ago, you bought me a flag to replace the old tattered one flying on my flag pole. I’ll think of you every morning when it goes up and every evening when it comes down. Knowing that flying a tattered flag bothered you, I’ll keep this one in better shape. Thanks Don for all you’ve done, for who you were and for providing another great role model for my kids. It was absolutely an honor and a pleasure to have known you. Only now will you probably be able to appreciate how much you meant to me, and how much I truly valued your friendship, advice, and companionship, even though just about every time we were together it was more about service to others than about us "socializing." I so wish I had been able to arrange things so that we could have been closer on a personal basis. I have a "lump in my throat", Don, so I guess I should go drink something. I hope you have found all that you expected, hoped for and deserve. I hope it is true that we really can meet again one day; so much was left unsaid when I moved away. I'm glad we got to talk on the phone, even though only briefly, a few weeks ago. I have and now always will miss you, my good friend and great volunteer, Mr. "Thank You Don" Bustin.

Dad, We miss you alot. Thanks for being the greatest dad a child could ever ask for. You always did things your way, which happened to be the correct way, and I admire that the most about you. Michael says that there is a new star in the sky and it is the brightest and that is your star. The kids handled things well seeing you on Saturday, you'd be proud of them all. I know that you are. Watch over the grandkids and help them be as wise as you were. I'm so sorry that you did not get to see the Maple Leafs win another Stanly Cup but hey, you got to see the Wings win three more.
If I can be one-quarter of the man you were I'll consider myself successful.
