Dr. Edgar L. Garrison's Obituary
Dr. Edgar L. Garrison, age 79, of Spring Lake passed away early Sunday morning, November 29, 2009, at his home in Florida. He was born September 23, 1930, in Muskegon to Gordon and Oma Garrison.
Edgar attended Muskegon High School, Muskegon Community College and the University of Michigan Dental School. He married the former Gretchen Lee Wesner on July 22, 1954. After dental school, he enlisted in the Air Force during the Korean War and served as a Captain practicing dentistry in Fairbanks, Alaska. He and his wife, Gretchen, moved to Spring Lake in 1956 where he built a successful dental practice that he operated for the next 43 years.
Ed was passionate about his family, his community and his business. He was one of 3 founding members of the Spring Lake Rotary Club, he served on the Spring Lake School Board and the Peoples Bank Board, he was a member of the Spring Lake Country Club, and he was a founding member of the Grand Haven Area Community Foundation.
Edgar never believed in retiring; he golfed daily and remained active in his dental business up until the day he passed away. Ed most enjoyed being in the midst of family and friends, laughing and exchanging jokes.
He is lovingly survived by his wife Gretchen, four sons and daughters-in-law: Brent and Robin, John and Amy, Tom and Phippi and Rob and Jill. He also has thirteen surviving grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A celebration of Ed’s life will be held at 12 noon on Friday, December 4, 2009, at the Spring Lake Country Club with Rev. Thomas Cook officiating. Memorial contributions to Grand Haven Area Community Foundation, Spring Lake Junior Golf Association or The University of Michigan School of Dentistry are appreciated. The family is being served by VanZantwick Bartels Kammeraad Funeral Home of Spring Lake.
