Edward G. Nieuwenhuis' Obituary
Mr. Edward G. Nieuwenhuis, age 71, went to be with his Lord unexpectedly Saturday, October 19, 2013. He was born in Apeldoorn, Netherlands on August 13, 1942 to Evert and Wilhelmina Nieuwenhuis and moved to the United States in 1947. Ed was a faithful and loving husband to his wife Sandy of 50 years. He was a caring and loving father to his children and a much loved “Papa” to his grandchildren. Ed never missed an opportunity to cart his grandchildren from place to place in his minivan, involving himself in so many areas of their lives, offering them guidance and help whenever and wherever he could. Ed retired from Meijer, Inc. after 30 years of faithful employment. He was active in his church, Covenant Life of Grand Haven, where he served on council and the church building project. He was a Grand Haven city council member for many years and also on the city planning commission. He was currently serving on the board of the West Michigan Food Bank. Ed was a veteran of the United States Navy and served his country in Japan. On October 25, 1963, Ed married the former Sandy Sterenberg and she survives him along with their three children, Michelle (Norm Stevens) Sheneman, Jason (Joan) Nieuwenhuis and Luke (Janine) Nieuwenhuis; ten grandchildren, Christian Nieuwenhuis, Rissa and Charlie Sheneman, Alex, Riley and Mia Nieuwenhuis, Kai, Aria, Becket and Carys Nieuwenhuis; two sisters, René (John) VanderHart and Wilma (Jim) Hart; one brother, John (Jeanne) Nieuwenhuis; one sister-in-law, Mary (Gary) Breuker; two brothers-in-law, Russ (Sue) Sterenberg and Jim (Kathy) Sterenberg; aunts and uncles, Ann and Augie Vanderwal, Gerri Pipping and Jean Groot; many cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Evert and Mimi Nieuwenhuis and his father and mother-in-law, Jay and Janet Sterenberg. FUNERAL SERVICES will be 11:00 AM Friday, October 25, 2013 at Covenant Life Church (101 Columbus Ave., Grand Haven) with Rev. Andy DeJong officiating. VISITATION will be from 2-4 & 6-8PM Thursday, October 24, 2013 at The Lee Chapel Sytsema Funeral Homes, Inc. 6291 S. Harvey St. Norton Shores, MI 231-798-1100 Burial will be in Lake Forest Cemetery in Grand Haven. MEMORIALS in Ed’s honor may be made to Calvin Christian School, Grand Rapids Christian School, Feeding America Food Bank – West Michigan or Covenant Life Church. Ed loved the Lord and was his faithful servant. We are at peace with the fact that he is now with his Lord walking the streets of gold and being reunited with all his loved ones and friends that have gone before him. He is now worshiping at the throne of his heavenly father.
