Edwin Boeve's Obituary
Edwin Jay Boeve, age 76, of Grand Haven passed away Friday, November 18, 2005, at his daughter’s home. He was born July 11, 1929 in Holland, MI to William M. and Henrietta (Laarman) Boeve. Mr. Boeve was a member of the Grand Haven Eagles, Mason Lodge 139 of which he was a 33rd-degree Shriner, Grand Haven American Legion, Tri-Cities Officials Association of which he was one of the original founders, and the First Presbyterian Church of Grand Haven. He was an avid sports fan; and he loved fishing, and spending time with family and friends. Edwin was an accomplished athlete earning 17 letters and patches in high school sports. He was a member of the 1948 Grand Haven Class B state championship basketball team. He played semi-professional football for the Holland Hurricanes. Edwin was a player/sponsor for the men’s city league fast-pitch team, the Boeve Comets, which held the league title for the most consecutive championships. This record stood until 1984 when the Boeve Comets, a women’s slow-pitch team sponsored by Ed, surpassed that record. The women’s team also won the 1976 Class C state championship. Survivors include two sons: Douglas (Monica) Boeve, Steven (Alvina) Boeve; three daughters: Roberta Porter, Etta Boeve, and Karen (Bill) Hitsman, all of the Tri-Cities area; 12 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren; his longtime companion and friend Joann Russell; his brother Harold (Maxine) Boeve of Allegan; friend Donna Boeve; sisters-in-law: Louise Boeve of Holland, Jerry Johnson and Shirley Boeve both of the Tri-Cities; several nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents, brothers: Alvin G., Gerald A., Lloyd, Laverne, and Marvin Boeve. A memorial service will be held Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at Spring Lake Presbyterian Church with Rev. Daniel Anderson officiating. Friends may meet the family at church one hour prior to the service from 5:30 until 6:30 p.m. and following the service at church.
