Eugene A. Haase's Obituary
Eugene A. Haase of Norton Shores, a lifelong resident of Muskegon County, died Wednesday, April 25, 2012. He was born on June 22, 1924 to Arthur and Winifred Haase in Muskegon. He met his wife Phyllis (Toshach) while attending a USO Club dance in Alberta, Canada, while serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII. They were married on July 9, 1947 in Alberta, Canada at the University of Alberta Chapel. Upon returning to Muskegon with his bride, Haase worked as a buyer and merchandise manager at Grossman’s Department store during the late 1940s and early 1950s. He opened his own business in 1953, Haase Hardware, which he operated for 45 years, often working side by side with his wife. He was a graduate of Muskegon High School and sometimes joked about being a graduate from the “University of Hard Knocks”. Haase had a passion for sailing his boat the “Encounter” in the Great Lakes with Northport as it’s home port. He was proud of his children and grandson. He was a longtime member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church. Haase was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Phyllis; son, David; and sister, Arlaine Marcil. He is survived by son, Robert (Jan) Haase; daughter, Sheila E. (Frank Michels) Molenkamp; grandson, Jake (Jenn) Molenkamp; sister, Eleanor (Ken) Veurink; brother, Harold (Elaine) Haase; and many nieces and nephews. SERVICES will be 2PM Sunday, at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church with Pastor Julie Winklepleck officiating. VISITATION will be from 2-5PM Saturday at The Walburn Chapel, Sytsema Funeral Homes, Inc. 1547, W. Sherman, 231-759-8565. Burial will be in the Oakwood Cemetery.
