Eugene "Gene" Maycroft's Obituary
Mr. Eugene C. “Gene” Maycroft, age 87, passed away late Tuesday evening, May 3, 2011. He was born March 28, 1924 to Harrison and Grace (Ward) Maycroft in Muskegon, and lived most of his life in the Muskegon area. Gene worked at Teledyne Continental Motors for 30 years before retiring , and was a WWII U.S. Army veteran. He was a talented singer and musician, and was a square dance caller for many clubs for over 60 years. He and his wife founded the Maycroft Square Tappers over 55 years ago; which became internationally known allowing the Maycrofts to travel the world and touch multitudes of young lives with their entertaining. He remained active with the group until his death. When he wasn’t entertaining he retreated to his Dance-a-lot stomping grounds. Gene was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. On September 6, 1946 he married Alice M. Thornberg, and she survives him along with 5 children, Jerry Maycroft of Muskegon, Randal (Leslie) Maycroft of Minnesota, Debra (Thomas) Bolthouse of Maryland, Nanette (Dave) Gonzales of Muskegon, Kathy (Dan) Kammeraad of Zeeland; 15 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren; 1 brother, Ron (Jeane) Maycroft; 1 sister, Dorothy Frizzel, 2 sisters-in law Betty Maycroft, Donna Schippers. He was preceded in death by 3 brothers, Walt, Glenn, and Don; and 1 sister, Mary Kelly. SERVICES will be 3:00 PM Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 3225 Roosevelt Rd., with Rev. Dennis L. Lassanske officiating. Burial will take place at Sunrise Memorial Gardens. VISITATION at The Lee Chapel, Sytsema Funeral Homes, Inc. 6291 S. Harvey St. (231) 798-1100 will be from 5:30 – 8:00 PM Friday, and 1 hour prior to the service at the church.
