F. Louis "Lou" Payment's Obituary
F. Louis Payment, age 71, passed away at Mercy Hospital, Saturday afternoon, March 12, 2011 following a short illness. He was born in St. Joseph, MI on February 17, 1940 to Charlie and Bernice (Mosier) Payment. At an early age the family moved to Empire, MI. Lou was a 1958 graduate of Glen Lake Community H.S. and received his Bachelor of Science degree from Central Michigan University with graduate work at CMU, the University of Michigan and Michigan State University. He began his career in education in Bad Axe, MI and came to Muskegon in 1965 to teach, art, speech and theater at Mona Shores High School. During his teaching career, Mr. Payment was twice honored as the Michigan Arts Educator of the year. He retired from Mona Shores Public Schools in 1995. Mr. Payment was also a former director of the Michigan Arts and Education Association. Lou’s passion was Community Theater, over the years, his direction and set designs included 35 productions at Mona Shores H.S. and countless other productions with, the Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp, Petoskey Playhouse, Bad Axe Community Theater, Houghton Lake Playhouse, Muskegon Civic Theatre and the Central Park Players. Survivors: Lou is survived by, two brothers, Leigh (Linda) Payment of Empire, MI and Chuck (Alyce) Payment of Duluth, MN; five nieces and nephews, Kari (Matt) Smith, Curtis (Amy) Payment, Ryan (Laura) Payment, Brooke (Aric) Day and Cory Payment; and faithful companion, his springer spaniel, “Pip”. A Celebration of his life will be held at: The Lee Chapel, Sytsema Funeral Homes, Inc. 6291 S. Harvey St. 231-798-1100, 11:00 A.M. Saturday, April 9, 2011.
