I sure going to miss you Gary, you have got to be one of the best Hagglers I have had the fun haggling with !!! All of my fellow mechanics will sure miss you to !!! You always had good advice for me, on life and cars. Your Friend always Mark (Shotgun ) Debard
It was 1971 when I first met Gary at the Ohio gun show in Columbus. He bought a Confederate spur from me and a 44-year friendship began. In 1982 he paid for my future wife's engagement ring by buying my two prized Confederate swords for $3,000, which was full bolt retail at the time. Decades later, we chuckled that my swords, which he had of course kept for all those years, were then worth $45,000 (with the current value of my wife's diamond tactfully not mentioned)! Only a few months ago, after countless invitations, I finally made the trek up to Spring Lake to see Gary's marvelous collection. As we explored his vast holdings, he wondered aloud if perhaps he had a compulsive obsession, but I very quickly corrected him. “All you have, Gary, is merely a healthy passion. Remember, if something can't be done with excess, it shouldn't be done at all!” Roaring with laughter, he proclaimed that he would adopt that philosophy as his life's credo, and it is with the happy and satisfied smile he wore at that moment that I shall remember him best.

Sending our deepest sympathy to your family. Praying for God's comfort, peace and healing during these difficult days. Wish we lived closer so we could attend the services for Gary. Our thoughts are with all of you.
Gary was 6 and I was 7. Our parents spent a lot of time together. When we would visit the big white house next to the salvage yard, Gary and I would have some 40 acres of cars, trucks, buses, loaders, and buildings to explore. Our favorite past time was looking under seats and trunks for lost and forgotten treasures. For 6 years my family followed Gary's dad Joe, on his racing circuit of tracks throughout Michigan. Berlin Raceway, Grand Rapids Speed Roam, and Whiskey Ridge were our favorite tracks. My Dad, Richard helped Joe with carburetion. Joe was one of the first to use a tripod. ( 3 - 2 barrel carburetor ) Gary and I enjoyed riding in the race car while it was being towed to the tracks. We were proud of old car number 22 and later 222.
There were good times while attending Grand Haven High both interested in cars and then girls. We had some interesting noon hour activities, double dates and car shows.
I've know Gary most of my life with brief intermissions for college and Air Force, then later marrying and starting a family. Gary, was the more level headed of us two. He kept me out of harms way and prevented me from making hasty and rash decisions.
Though I've lost a good friend and buddy I only have to close my eyes for a moment and see his face with that unique smirk of his -------- thanks for the memories.

Ruth, Aaron, Zak and Caleb--my sincere and heartfelt condolences. I have a lifetime of childhood memories of Gary behind the counter at Joe's while I was sent in to get a random part for a go kart or one of our cars. I always enjoyed his playfully gruff encounters with my dad at the counter as well. With sympathies.
Gary was a mentor, getting me interested in working with cars over 50 years ago. Sincerest sympathy to the family at this time of loss.
