My mother-in-law was one amazing lady. I was honored to witness her incredible strength and courage once her life took a turn she never saw coming. Though she was confused and mistaken about a lot of things, she remembered and loved her family. She recalled that Grandpa was always good to her. She didn't always remember names but was so greatful for visits and the more time we spent with her, the more lucid and in the moment she became. She managed to find purpose in her life though some of her work at Brookhaven was more imagined than real. She expressed appreciation for those there who cared for her although she thought they were too young to know what they were doing, hence her help!
I always thought she was a formidable woman and was a little afraid of her for the first years I knew her. I learned that everything she did was out of love and the desire to do what was right, and realized that she wanted very much to be recognized and validated. As she entered her final years, all defenses were down and she truly shone for who she was. I love her and still miss her......
