George Brown's Obituary
Mr. George Brown, age 92, of Norton Shores passed away Sunday, October 9, 2011. He was born December 28, 1918 in Ellsworth, MI to John and Hattie (Veenstra) Brown. George served during WWII as a member of the US Navy and was Captain of the LST 639. After serving in the war he was a school principal and retired in 1977 from Churchill Porter School. He was a member of Calvin Christian Reformed Church. He was an avid golfer and his team won the Senior World Championship for Softball in 2000 for the over 80 age group and was known to play bridge. On January 27, 1949 he married the former Roberta Hitzfield in Kalamazoo and she survives him along with 2 sons, Craig Brown of Bremerton, Washington and Forrest “Woody” (Kathy) Brown of Norton Shores; 7 grandchildren: Brittany, Hunter “Blake”, Erin, Jenny, Nicky; and 8 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Hunter Brown on October 27, 2009; 2 brothers, August and John Brown; 1 sister, Leona Grit. A Memorial Service for George will be 11:00 AM Friday, October 14, 2011 at The Lee Chapel - 6291 S. Harvey St - 231-798-1100 with Rev. Al Hoksbergen officiating. Visitation with George’s family will be 6-8 PM Thursday at the funeral home. Interment will take place in Atwood Cemetery.
