Gerald D. "Jerry" Dobberstein's Obituary
Mr. Gerald D. Dobberstein, 85, passed away Monday morning, December 3, 2012, at his home. Born June 29, 1927 to Herman and Marie (Kirstein) Dobberstein, he was a life resident of Muskegon. Jerry served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict, and was a member of Lakeside Baptist Church. He married the former Jean G. Card on June 5, 1948, and she died October 1, 2006. Jerry was a graduate of Muskegon High School where he had been a first-string basketball forward and baseball pitcher, and he retired as a general maintenance worker from Muskegon Public Schools after many years of service. He was also well known as a plasterer, which was something he did for people until he was 80. Jerry had been a basketball referee and baseball umpire for many years, and had 14 championship trophies for handball. His SURVIVORS include three sons: Daniel (Joann) Dobberstein of Saginaw, Marc (Cheryl) Dobberstein of Fruitport, and Larry (Rhonda) Dobberstein of South Haven; and six grandchildren: Jason, Ryan, Jeremy, Erik, Jordan and Brianna; a brother Dale Dobberstein and a sister Ardeth Burr. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, brothers Ken and Lyle and sister Doris. THE FUNERAL SERVICE for Mr. Dobberstein will be held 11:00 A.M. Saturday, December 8, 2012 at The Lee Chapel, 6291 S. Harvey St., Norton Shores, MI 49444, 231-798-1100 with Pastor Ken Shady officiating, and interment in Lakeside Cemetery. VISITATION will be 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Friday, December 7, 2012 at the funeral home. MEMORIAL CONTRIBUTIONS to Muskegon Rescue Mission would be appreciated.
