Harrison A. Sikkenga's Obituary
Harrison Arthur Sikkenga, age 78, passed away Sunday morning, July 15, 2018, at the Poppen Residence, following a courageous battle with Lymphoblastic Leukemia. He was born June 16, 1940, in Muskegon to Percy and Jane (VandenBosch) Sikkenga and has been a life resident of the area. Harry was a graduate of Western Michigan Christian High School, Calvin College and The University of Michigan.
Harry had been a math teacher at Mona Shores Schools for 30 years. He served as President of the Mona Shores Education Association for 16 of those years, a member of the Michigan Education Association Board of Directors for 12 years including 4 years as its Secretary-Treasurer. He also served on the Board of Directors of the National Education Association. Following his employment with Mona Shores he worked for the Michigan Education Association, retiring in 2000. Following retirement Harry served on the MEA Retired Board and as President of the West Michigan Chapter of MEA Retired. He also served on the Board of Muskegon Christian School. Harry was a member of Calvin Christian Reformed Church, where he served as an Elder and Deacon and as part of its Friendship Ministry since its inception.
On June 12, 1963, he married the former Charlynne K. Heeres; and she survives him along with their 2 daughters, Charyn Hain of Norton Shores and Kristin (Brad) Northrop of Ann Arbor, MI; 6 grandchildren, Alison, Emily, Jackson and Zachary Northrop, Christian and Joseph Hain; 3 brothers, Arthur (Alice) Sikkenga, Peter (Dianne) Sikkenga, both of Whitehall, and Stanley (Judy) Sikkenga of Muskegon. Harry was preceded in death by his parents.
A MEMORIAL SERVICE for Harry will be held 2:00 PM Friday, August 3, 2018 at Calvin Christian Reformed Church, 937 W. Norton Ave, Norton Shores, MI 49441 with Rev. Mark Milkamp officiating. VISITATION with Harry’s family will be from 4-7PM Thursday, August 2, 2018 at the Lee Chapel, 6291 S. Harvey St., Norton Shores, MI 49444 (231-798-1100).
