Herman "Herm" E. Rosin's Obituary
Herman “Herm” Edward Rosin, age 93, of Spring Lake passed away Friday, October 9, 2009, at a local care facility. He was born, the last of three children, on June 11, 1916, to Edward and Iva (Salyer) Rosin in Grand Haven. Herm married the former Lorraine Parrish of Coopersville on November 30, 1939, in Grand Haven and together they raised their four children: Raymond, Ronald, JoAnn and Lora Sue.
Herm was a lifelong resident of the area except for a brief period during the Depression when he served in the Civilian Conservation Corps in the Upper Peninsula. The majority of his employment was with Oldbergs for 33 years. In 1946 Herm and his wife bought waterfront property on the western end of Jerusalem Bayou. In addition to living there they built Herm’s Boat Livery which initially was a bait and rowboat livery that started with a neighbor’s boat tied to a tree. The business evolved into a boat dockage marina serving over 70 power craft and selling gasoline. Sixty years later it is still in operation. Herm and Lorraine enjoyed their many boat marina friends and gasoline sales customers, some of whom have been there for 40 years.
Herm enjoyed hunting and fishing especially during the tough years to just put food on the table, but later just for the sport and companionship they offered. He was skilled in photography using just a simple camera and as a family traveled on many motor trips. In later years, he and Lorraine traveled and camped throughout the U.S. and Canada. Their gardens and vineyards produced many beautiful harvests and beverages.
Herm is survived by his son, Ron (Nancy) Rosin; daughter-in-law, Cheryl Rosin; 5 grandchildren: Robin Reed, Alice (Steve) Chubb, Ryan (Heather) Rosin, Renee (Don) Wiser, Robb (Amanda) Rosin; 13 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; 2 sisters, Blanche and Henrietta; his wife Lorraine in 1995; 2 daughters, JoAnn (Miller) Buczyski and Lora Burnham; and a son, Raymond.
A funeral service for Herm will be held Wednesday, October 14, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. from VanZantwick Bartels Kammeraad Funeral Home in Grand Haven with Rev. Kathy Colliver officiating. Friends may meet the family Tuesday from 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be at Spring Lake Cemetery.
