Dear Dorothy and Family,
My sincere sympathy to you all upon the death of Howard. I enjoyed being his neighbor. One of my recollections was one winter day when - with Josie Wenk and Mike and Betsy and a carload of groceries - I attempted to drive up the slippery driveway. About halfway up, the card stopped and started to slide backward. Halfway down it did a donut and wound up going forward down the driveway. Howard was standing at the bottom of his drive. Without much ado, he said, "Only a woman could pull that out." I admired the way he cared for his aunt while she was a resident of The Hume Home. One of the greats. Quarterback of Muskegon High School's Big Reds of 1945, who squared off against the Heights Tigers at Hackley Stadium in a showdown of the undefeated. Just like the fall of 2008, West Michigan became the state's focal point for football that autumn. In that battle for Michigan's mythical state crown, played out before 13,000 fans, the Tigers emerged victors 7-6 after stopping Muskegon on four downs at the goal line. But the Muskegon area was the winner. A host of Big Reds and Tigers earned All-State honors that year, and the game is still talked about today. I met Howie because of my interest in high school football and in this game. What a class guy. He helped research and preserve local history with writing and photo work, and guidence and knowledge impacted my life and my hobbies. He and Dorothy would share in the celebration of the birth of my sons. I'll miss him, his guidance, and that Peterson chuckle. I was employed at Anaconda during some of the years Howard was Purchasing Agent. I was in Payroll,Engineering and Accounts Payable over 16 years.
