Jan,

I'm a little late in getting notice of your mother's death. She was a wonderful lady who will be missed by many. The Old Guard of Glenside is slowly loosing it's numbers. I have nothing but fond memories of the many years we all spent together and your mother is very much a part of those memories. I'm sure she has already joined my mom and others for a bridge game or two.
I hope to see you in July. It's hard to believe it has been 40 years since our graduation. I don't like to think of myself being 40 years old, let alone out of high school 40 years.

Dear Jan: It has been 40 years since we were friends back in the Glenside neighborhood. I want you to know how much I appreciated your mother back in those days. She was smart, friendly, caring and fashionable. I always felt she was interested in all of us junior high Glenside girls. I just found out about her death. I've lived in Grand Rapids for 29 years & have worked at Aquinas College for nearly as long.

Dear Jan and Mart,

When I called last Thursday to say how much your mother meant to me, I had no conscious idea that she would pass away in a few days. My heart was tugged toward her and I wanted you and her to know that she was very present to me.

It is true that it takes a village to raise a child. Your mom helped to parent me by gently correcting me when I got wildly out of line (which was frequent), making me always welcome in your home, and never criticizing my parents for what they did or didn't do. She gave me her laughter, her recipes, her time, her vigilance. She helped me in quiet ways I have unwrapped like gifts over the years.

Jannie, Thank you for sharing her with me. My heart is with you and Mart and all your family.
