Sadness has filled many hearts upon hearing of the passing our dear Jan. Be assured that many prayers for peace and rest will be spoken on your behalf, Mike and family, in the coming days and weeks ahead as you continue on life’s journey without your loved one by your side.
Many happy memories will come to you during the quiet times you will have as you sit alone and ponder life.
Remember God’s love as you sit.
Remember He knows all you carry in your hearts.
Laughter comes as I sit and think about Jan and I sitting on her bed in her family home, as teenagers, after church me being invited over for
Sunday dinner. Laughing, talking and maybe just a little bit of gossip about the other kids in our Harbour Teens Youth Group. Jan and I thought we were pretty cool. I think we probably really were!
We both loved the Lord and tried living for Him the best we could.
We knew we could always improve, we even talked about that, but teenage life wasn’t easy and we loved to have fun.
Audrey was a big help to us both.
Always speaking of the Lord to us and reading scripture and explaining it to us.

What a wonderful heritage. I will miss you Jan. Thank you for all the wonderful, fun, happy memories.

Mike, Andrea, Paul & entire Rathbun family,

I have not seen Jan in over 20 years but I feel a loss knowing she is no longer with us. But to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord and what rejoicing there is in Heaven. As George Younce sang "should you go first and I remain...walk slowly and wait for me" I can see Jan walking slowly waiting on you Mike. How wonderful that she made hats for cancer patients - so like her. May God wrap His arms around you and comfort you all during this sad and difficult time and I truly hope knowing that you have many friends across the United States holding you up in thought and prayer is comforting to you.

I would love to take credit for these words, but a friend of mine wrote them and of course I am parphrasing (and have her permission to use them): Now that Jan is gone, she is everywhere...every ray of sunshine, every drop of rain, every clap of thunder, every gentle breeze, every twinkle in the stars...she is there. Andrea & Paul, when you really miss your Mom and want to see her, look in the mirror, for she is in your eyes. Your are part of her because she made you, and in your eyes, you will find peace. Jan was taken from this earth way too early and is gone but not forgotten. She is like a ship that we are watching set sail. The ship is fading...fading into the horizon, and we are tearful and think "I can't see her anymore." How sad for us. But on the other side, they see the ship on the horizon getting closer and closer, and celebrate with great exaltation "Hallelujiah, she is coming, she is coming!!" What a welcome she will get!! I hope these beautiful words my friend wrote are comforting to you. (I did get her permission to use them)

And one more thing to remember, she is not gone, she is just away..."resting until resurrection morn".

Words cannot express the sadness I feel for the Rathbun family. I know Jan was a rock for her husband and kids, and grandkids. She will be greatly missed. My heart, my thoughts and my prayers are with you all today. I wish I could be there but obligations would not permit. My heart goes out to the Rathbun family during their time of sorrow. Remember this is not goodbye, but see you later in heaven. I hope the found memories you all have of Jan make it easier as the days go by. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.
