John was a unique man whose early years of suffering were used by God to shape him as one whose compassion blessed many others. Perhaps early in the 2000s, after I met him at a Classis gathering, I asked him to meet me for lunch so I could learn his story. We spent three hours together and he told me about his gruesome years in the prison camp during WWII. As a child he witnessed so much cruelty and suffering. Many years after that, perhaps several decades, he finally felt healed after a remarkable experience at a retreat, where Jesus entered more clearly into his memories of savage brutality. His sharing with me was a gift I treasure, and I hope it was a blessing to him, as well. I have written an account of that interview and shared it with only a few people in my family and his, as well. Any who know not much of it as welcome to contact me. Stan Hagemeyer, Fountain MI
