I worked with John at The Muskegon Chronicle for many years and will always remember his cheerful smile and kind manner.
When I first came to The Chronicle to work on the copy desk in 1977, he was always helpful and considerate while I was "learning the ropes."
During one late Saturday work shift, there was some discord between myself and another printer. John, the peacemaker, took it upon himself to bring us together and help us make amends.
John always showed concern for others. He and Art Wolffis were frequent visitors to our next-door neighbors, the Mersmans, an elderly couple.
And I'll always remember the wonderful time I had at the Dolislagers meeting and chatting with their future Brazilian in-laws! It was great to use my portuguese again several years after living and serving as a missionary in Curitiba, Sao Paulo (Mooca, Pinheiros), Araraquara and Campinas from 1971-1973. I also appreciated the opportunity to be able to show them around The Chronicle.
I'm sorry that I will be out of town and unable to attend the celebration of his life of kindness, helpfulness and cheerfulness. John truly was a gentle giant of a man!
May the Lord comfort you in your time of grief and bless you because of John's many good works.

You all have our deepest sympathy in your loss. We have many fond memories over the years of conversations with Bill at various gatherings.
