To share one memory of Uncle Joe just can not be done on this website. My wife and boys and I have countless memories of him and Aunt Jennie. We have taken our summer vacations every year to silver lake and must stop by to see how they are doing. From apple fritters and countless cups of coffe ,to just sitting in the kitchen watching the hummingbirds and car ferry coming and going. He was always interested in my boys daily lives. From Jesse joining the Marine corps to Justin and his Eagle Scout project. He even had time to talk endlessly about birds the Detroit Tigers ,golf , the papermill. A one hour stop by to visit almost always ended up 4-4.5 hours later saying see you later uncle joe. He will be a presence in our lives that will always be missed.

Uncle joe you might be gone from this earth but you will always be secured deeply in a special place in our hearts.

One of earliest memories I ever had as a child, I must have been only 2 or 3 at the time, is when I realized how much my Uncle Joe looked so much like my own father. I remember being so mesmerized and amazed by the similarities that I told myself, "wow, this is too weird, I better pay closer attention as to who's actually telling me what". When my own father talked about his childhood, going down to the butcher to get a bone for the dog and Grandma Gabris cooking that bone down for soup before giving it to the dog or building a bike from junkyard pieces with my Uncle Jean and Uncle Joe, the only thing that really registered with me was my Dad going through these experiences with my Uncle Joe. When I was a child, the phrase "kids are to be seen and not heard", was popular phrase , so when I was listening in on the adult conversations (keeping quiet of course), I remember someone kept talking about "Vern", I would quickly look around the room but only ever saw my Dad, Uncle Joe and sometimes Grandpa Gabris. As quickly as I could snap my head around and look, I just couldn't find "Vern", it was a mystery to me, I had no idea who Vern was. It must have taken me years to finally figure out, "Vern" was actually my Uncle Joe. Although I loved all my aunts and uncles equally the same, there was just something special and different about my Uncle Joe, the man also known as Vern and kept me guessing for years, I will miss you. I truly idolized my Uncle Joe because he reminded me so much of my own father. I'm so sorry to hear of my uncles passing, there will always be a special place in my heart, I love you Uncle Joe.

I'm sorry for the families loss but I am also so hurt that they do NOT even mention that he is survived also by his brother Alan Gabris. So very hurtful to do that!!!!!

Papa Joe was always so sweet and so kind. When I was younger, every year for Christmas he would buy me a new dress because that's all I ever wanted to wear back then. Of course, shy little me was forced to model it for the family, but those dresses were always something I looked forward to. And everyone knows his birthday signs were the best!! I was always eager to see what clever saying he would write each year. He even made me one for my wedding day, which I still have! These are the moments I will remember him for when I look at the Polaroid pictures I have from him; Papa Joe will be missed by so many. We love you Papa Joe, RIP.

From the first time we met Joe and Jeannie they welcomed us so warmly and made us feel like we were old family friends. Joe had a special "people-talent" and could visit with the best of them. Special prayers and love to Jeannie and to our kids Kelly and Ken and grandson David M. And Sailie too as they go through a period of great loss.

Papa Joe, I will never forget the birthday signs you make would make for us, the envelope of polaroids and pictures you would have for us whenever you would see us, and how you and Grandma would always make it to birthday parties and celebrations. So thankful we were able to see you at Christmas and even more thankful to have you as part of our family for the past 30 years. Thank you for taking such wonderful care of Grandma. You will forever be in my heart.

Joe was a wonderful, caring, endlessly generous soul whose mission in life was to serve others. He was a dear and dedicated family friend of over 20 years and I am blessed to have met him. My parent's summer home is just next door to Jean and Joe and they quickly became good friends. I cannot imagine a visit to Muskegon without his smiling face bringing the newspaper to my family, snapping photographs and then running off to have them printed in order to share them, walking the street making sure everything is in order and to scope out opportunities to help a neighbor. He will be deeply missed.
