Mrs. Katherine "Kassy" Smith's Obituary
Mrs. Katherine ‘Kassy’ M. Smith, age 91, passed away Friday afternoon, February 24, 2012 at Great Lakes Specialty Hospital. She was born September 29, 1920 in Stambaugh, MI to John and Genevieve (Colien) Corbett and has resided in the Muskegon area the past several years, moving here from Athens, OH. A graduate of Loyola University School of Nursing, Kassy was a Registered Nurse who first worked as a stewardess for American Airlines, served as an obstetrics nurse in Abingdon, VA, a school nurse for Port Clinton Public Schools in Port Clinton, OH, and as a public health nurse for the Athens County Health Department in Athens, OH for 13 years prior to her retirement in 1989. Kassy was a parishioner of St. Francis deSales Catholic Church and was previously a parishioner of St. Paul Catholic Church of Athens, OH where she served on the Altar Society. On January 15, 1948 she married Robert L. Smith in Iron River, MI, and he survives her along with their daughter, Virginia ‘Ginny’ (F. Remington, M.D.) Sprague of Norton Shores; 4 grandchildren, Robert R. (Maura) Sprague, Stephen Corbett (Crystal) Sprague, Thomas Royce Sprague and Erin Elizabeth Sprague; 2 great-grandsons, Hunter Sprague and Owen Sprague,1 sister, Jeanne Lemmens of Stevens Point, WI and by several nieces and nephews. Katherine was preceded in death by her son, William Corbett Smith on October 31, 2006.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, March 3rd at 11:00 a.m. in the Marian Chapel at St. Francis de Sales Church with the Rev. Fr. Philip P. Salmonowicz presiding. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery. VISITATION with Kassy’s family will be Friday, March 2nd, from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM at The Walburn Chapel of Sytsema Funeral Homes, Inc.; 1547 W. Sherman Blvd., Muskegon, MI 49441 (231-759-8565). The Rosary will be prayed at 6PM. For a more lasting memorial, you are asked to consider Muskegon Catholic Education Foundation or St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church.
