Larry J. Medema's Obituary
Larry James Medema, age 74, passed away Monday, May 3, 2021 following a courageous battle with Parkinson’s Disease. He was born in Muskegon on December 13, 1946 and remained a local resident his entire life. Larry graduated from Muskegon High School in 1964, attended Muskegon Community College, and went on to earn both a BA and a MA from Western Michigan University. He married Nancy Hansen in Muskegon on November 30, 1968, who survives him along with daughter, Lori and son-in-law Eric Schimmelmann and two grandchildren, Emily (fiancé, Fred Wright) and Joseph Schimmelmann, both of whom he adored. Larry was employed for nearly 30 years as a teacher and football and basketball coach at Mona Shores Middle School. He also served as the “Voice of the Sailors” for over 25 years as the announcer for Mona Shores High School football games. He was a member of the Lakeside Vets Club and the Vikings. Larry was also an avid golfer and enjoyed ballroom dancing with his wife. Over the years he volunteered for Meals on Wheels, the American Cancer Society, and the Harbor Hospice Poppen Residence. Due to COVID-19, private family services will be held. Entombment will take place in Evergreen Mausoleum.
