Lawrence Eugene Kuipers' Obituary
Lawrence E. Kuipers, age 88, of Grand Haven passed away on Tuesday, August 4, 2015, at Riverside Nursing and Rehabilitation Community. He was born May 13, 1927, in Zeeland to Herman and Bertha (Damstra) Kuipers, and he married Lucille Scheltema on December 18, 1947, in Grand Haven, MI.
Lawrence proudly served his country in the United States Navy during World War II. He also was a member of Second Reformed Church, the American Legion Charles A. Conklin Post #28, American Legion Honor Guard, Scoutmaster for Second Reformed Boy Scout Troup 38; he was the first Scoutmaster in Ottawa County to receive the “Scoutmaster Key”. Lawrence enjoyed bowling, camping, square dancing; he loved to watch the Detroit Tigers and was an umpire in the city league baseball.
He is lovingly remembered by his wife Lucille; daughters, Wanda (Lawrence) Cleveringa, Debra (Edward) DeYoung, Sherry (Marvin) Mingerink; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren; and his sister-in-law, Joyce Kuipers. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter and her husband, Lois and William Geene; sisters, Ella Vanderwater, Vivian Beukema and Phyliss Kamper; and his brothers, Ivan, Junior, and Duane Kuipers.
A funeral service for Lawrence will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, August 10, 2015, at Second Reformed Church in Grand Haven with Rev. Lary Jackson officiating. Military honors will be provided by the American Legion Charles A. Conklin Post #28 Honor Guard. Friends may meet the family from 1-4 p.m. Sunday, August 9, at VanZantwick Bartels Kammeraad Funeral Home in Grand Haven. Interment will be in Lakeshore Cemetery. Memorial contributions to The American Legion Charles A. Conklin Post #28 Scholarship Fund or The Little Red House Adult Day Care are appreciated.
