The thing about my Mom, is that we are an awful lot alike. Generous, smart, funny, vain and perhaps just a little but stubborn.
Generous in that, she was willing to let each of us kids live with her when we were adults if necessary. Smart in that, Mom did not go to college but was able to self-learn the insurance agent business from the ground up and make a good living at being an agent. Funny in that, we had a burping contest at the dining room table and Mom won, of course. Vain, in that she always wanted to look her best and did not like anyone to see her looking old. Mom was proud that she did not need an assistive device to walk.
When Dan and I visited Mom a week ago in the hospital, I was surprised to see her looking so frail and bent over. Once Mom saw us come into her hospital room, she straightened up a bit to show that she was just fine and not even a little bit sick. Mom always wanted to look her best. (Vain)
When we discussed her care with the doctors, Mom contributed by giving her medical history and thoughts on why she was ill. (Smart)
During the visit, I noticed that Mom was getting Ensure with 45 grams of carbs per bottle. I was horrified at my diabetic mother consuming so many carbs in one shot. I talked to the doctors about the carbs and I was the only one concerned. Mom, grinned at me, smiled and happily sucked down her chocolate Ensure drink. (Funny and stubborn)
If not for my mother I wound not have believed that I could do anything I wanted to do, Mom did not hold you back from your dreams. (Generous)
