My sister Marie was the oldest sister of us girls and I was the youngest. She graduated from high school when I was three years old. I remember being about maybe six years old when she came to the farm and took me back to her apartment in Saginaw, where she was living at the time. It was very unusual and special for me to be off the farm, in the city, in an apartment, and receiving all this individual attention. We went shopping for new clothes for me, we went out to eat, and we had hotdogs which I loved, I took a fun bubble bath at her apartment and I remember her asking me if I would like a spot of tea and it made me feel so grown-up.
Many years later, when we were both grown with children of our own, I was visiting with Marie when I mentioned a really cool boutique hotel I had discovered in Austin Texas and I wanted to go. And she said she had never been to Austin Texas so we decided to take a trip together. We had never traveled together before and we had the best time. The small hotel had a beautiful patio under large lush green trees with a fountain, plantings and very comfortable sofas. We enjoyed afternoon Siesta’s with cool drinks there. We had some great meals, one luncheon at a brand new W hotel in downtown Austin was exceptional. One evening we went to the Congress Avenue bridge to watch the bat fly off at dusk. We were able to chat with a lot of people from all over the world that had come to see the bats fly off into the night. We also went to the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center and spent the whole day basking in the sun and flowers.
I am very grateful for these memories of my sister.
