Martin Henry Kortekaas' Obituary
Martin Henry Kortekaas, age 87, passed away peacefully in his home Monday, February 2, 2015 in Holland, Michigan. Martin was born on June 13, 1927 to the late Leonard and Anna Kortekaas in Lisse, the Netherlands. He was the fourth of thirteen children. Martin immigrated to Holland, Michigan in November of 1954. His fiancée, Anna Dobbe immigrated 18 months later and they were married May 5, 1956 at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Holland, Michigan. Martin turned his love of gardening, landscaping, and flowers into a successful business. Martin’s Gardens was located in Spring Lake and kept Martin very busy until he retired at the age of 86. He was a devoted husband and father. Martin was a member of the Dutch International Society as well as St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Spring Lake for over 50 years. Martin is preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, one sister, and daughter Caroline. He is survived by his wife Anna of 59 years and six children: Anna Kortekaas of Springtown, TX; Elizabeth Kortekaas (Sam D’Angelo) of Kentwood, MI; Martin (Lisa) Kortekaas of Lakeview, MI; Mary Jo (John) McKeever of Howard City, MI; Leonard Kortekaas of Los Angeles, CA; Theresa (George) Zielke of South Bend, IN. He also leaves behind 13 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 AM Friday, February 6, 2015 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Rev. Father David Gross officiating. Visitation will be held 2-4 and 6-8 PM Thursday, February 5, with a rosary service at 4:00 PM, at VanZantwick Bartels Kammeraad Funeral Home in Spring Lake, and also one hour prior to the service on Friday at the church. Interment will take place in Spring Lake Cemetery. Memorial contributions in memory of Martin may be given to Hospice of Holland or the Alzheimer’s Association.
