On Wednesday, Grandma "went home". She told my sister repeatedly last night that she wanted to go home, and now she is there- free from the pain and confusion that have been the hallmark of her last years. Before she left us though, she shared with us lessons that are indelible and will live on in me and my children.
1. The out of doors is an amazing and wondrous thing- you should revel in them.
2. Chocolate chip cookies are a blessing. Eat them. Often.
3. Family, however maddening is FAMILY.
4. Your people are your people- gay/straight white/black- it didn't matter. She stretched her mind and heart to include us all.
5. Hold the babies. All of them.
6. There is nothing better than a good quilt.
7. Complaining: don't do it. It's useless ("we all have our crosses to bear.") Instead, grit your teeth and get to work!
Grandma used funny Belgian phrases describing baby fat and she used to revel and relax while I pin curled her hair. She raised six children...and passed her love for strong opinions on to all of them. Grandma had an opinion on all things that was freely expressed.
She had an opinion that was expressed on who I was with (she preferred Chrissy) and how I wore my hair (she preferred it long) and the usefulness of moles (none) and fresh raspberries (the best, eat them all). She left a legacy of strong, independent women. May she rest in peace and live on in our actions.
