Dolores Donohue Andrews
I will always remember Maxine and Caesar driving to Clarke College in Dubuque, Iowa, to visit Leone. They came often throughout our four years there. Each time they came, they took a large group of us, girls, to dinner at Timmerman’s (Dubuque’s fanciest restaurant at that time) and Maxine always encouraged us to order anything on the menu and to be sure to bring a “doggie bag” back to the dorm for midnight snacks. Maxine and Caesar were such a fun couple – so happy and loving! Dinner conversation was always lively and funny. We laughed and talked throughout the meal. Maxine and Caesar had such hearty laughs. They had great stories to tell, too. At the end of their visits with Leone, they would hug and kiss us all good-bye and tell us all to study hard and to be good!
They were true sports fans. Maxine once told me that their whole family was watching an important Notre Dame game on TV late one night. When Notre Dame finally won, they all went outside into the back yard, banging pots and pans, crying real tears, and laughing and cheering enough to wake the dead – not to mention the neighbors.
Maxine was so stylish, too. She always looked like she had just stepped out of a fashion magazine. A beautiful woman – inside and out.
Maxine was a wonderful and loving mom. She was fiercely proud of her children and it is clear that they loved her dearly. I am sure that Maxine and Caesar are together, happy in the knowledge that their love has spread throughout many generations of family and friends.
