Melvin W. Meyer's Obituary
Melvin W. Meyer, age 82, of Grand Haven passed away Wednesday, November 28, 2007, at his home following a lingering illness. He was born June 25, 1925, in Crescent City, Illinois, to William and Katie (ZumMallen) Meyer. He married Doris Irwin on February 19, 1949, in Watseka, Illinois, and he moved to Grand Haven in 1954.
Mr. Meyer served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, and he was a member of the VFW Sgt. Alvin Jonker Post #2326 in Grand Haven. He worked at Welded Products for many years before retiring from Coastal Roll Form as a plant superintendent. Melvin was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Grand Haven, and he enjoyed being outdoors and serving as a general handyman for his family and friends.
Melvin was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Eldor Meyer; and sisters Viola Easter and Rosella Rieches. Survivors include his wife, Doris; a son, Larry (Christina) Meyer of Grand Haven; a daughter, Sandra VanWeelden of Grand Haven; five granddaughters: Melanie VanWeelden, Jennifer MacDonald, Julie Smith, Joanne (Victor) Rodriguez, Jaime (Lester) Gaither; a sister, Mona (Kenneth) Gaffield of Sheldon, IL; and nine great-grandchildren.
The service for Melvin will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, December 2, 2007, at VanZantwick Bartels Kammeraad Funeral Home in Grand Haven with Rev. Dieter Haupt officiating. Friends may meet the family one hour prior to the service, from 1-2 p.m. Sunday, at the funeral home. Military rites will be provided under the auspices of the VFW Sgt. Alvin Jonker Post #2326 Honor Guard. Interment will be in Lakeshore Cemetery.
