Mr. Alvia Frank "Al" Cater's Obituary
Mr. Alvia Frank “Al” Cater, age 80, passed away Wednesday, June 2, 2010 at North Ottawa County Hospice. He was born in Muskegon, MI on January 4, 1930 to Alvia Abram and Eva (Johnson) Cater. Mr. Cater earned his Master’s Degree in Education from Western Michigan University. While he was at Western, he played baseball, basketball and 4 years of football. Mr. Cater was a veteran of the United States Army and served during the Korean War as a Military Policeman. After his service to his country, Mr. Cater returned to Muskegon to start his career. He taught at Muskegon Heights High School and was administrator at Portage Public Schools and Niles Community Schools before retiring in 1987. Mr. Cater was a member of St. Mark Lutheran Church and the Viking Linne’ Lodge #57. He spent 22 years as a state level sports official for basketball and football, enjoyed reading, golfing and tutoring math students; he had a great sense of humor and enjoyed telling life experience stories. On December 29, 1956, Al married the former Juanita Kay Gillette in Muskegon, MI and she survives him along with four children, Alan Scott (Katie) Cater of Santa Cruz, CA, Kathryn A. (Jack) Angell of Oswego, IL, Cheryl L. Cater of Niles, MI and Thomas Jay (Michelle) Cater of Lombard, IL; nine grandchildren, Chelsea and Olivia Cater, Jason (Candice), Christopher and Michael Ericksen, Nicholas and Ryan Angell, Andrew and Mackenzie Cater; one great-granddaughter, Mia Talamantez; special cousin who was like a sister, Helen Weideman; his step-mother, Nerissa Cater and her children,Jack (Virginia) Aldred and Rosemary Aldred; many nieces, nephews and cousins. A MEMORIAL SERVICE will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday, June 15, 2010 at St. Mark Lutheran Church (4475 Henry St.) with Rev. Mark E. Zimmerman officiating. VISITATION will be from 4:00-8:00 PM Monday, June 14, 2010 at The Walburn Chapel, Sytsema Funeral Homes, Inc. 1547 W. Sherman Blvd. 231-759-8565.
