When I first met Clare, she totally terrified me. But it wasn't long before I learned to look for the twinkle in her eye to know just how nervous I should be. I considered her a friend, certainly of the Hackley & Hume Site, but also of mine. I've always admired her nerve,determination, and savvy. No one could size up a person faster or more acurately than Clare Daniels. I often told her she was my idol and that when I grew up, I wanted to be just like her. But I know she was one of a kind. I will remember Clare for her intelligence,her political insight,her love of country and community.I will particularly remember her hard work,dedication,the Lincoln Day Dinners and her letters from Abe Lincoln. I had the opportunity to meet Ms Daniels for a very short time but I do wish to express my condolences. I was lucky to have met her. She was extremely impressionable and a fiesty woman whom I greatly enjoyed taking care of, even if it was for just a few days. I would just like to say what a terrific lady Clare was. She was a dear and close friend to my Mother, Margaret Greenwood for many years and through that friendship I was fortunate to have known her. I was saddened to read of Clare's passing and extend condolances to her family. I knew her in the 1970's thru the county Republican Party and worked on PR for the committee for some time while I was with WKBZ radio. Clare taught us some good political lessons going back to Chicago politics (Vote early and often). I am sorry to not be able to pay respects in person due to being out of town. I remember Clare with fondness. She loved decorating the Hackley House 1st parlor for the holiday season. The first time I met Clare we had bee talking in the Hackley House entry hall when John McGarry walked in. She poked me with her elbow and said "watch this." She went over to John and said something needed to be moved. After he moved it she turned around and winked at me.
