Phil Southland's Obituary
Mr. Phil Southland, age 73, passed away early Wednesday morning, January 23, 2013 at his home following a brief, but courageous, battle with cancer. He was born July 4, 1939 to William and Jennie (Noordhof) Southland in Muskegon, and lived here most of his life. Phil was a proud U.S. Navy veteran, and a member of the Mona Lake Boating Club. For the past 14 years, he and his family have owned and operated the Bent Pine Golf Club. On July 21, 1962 Phil married Joane L. Petroskey, and she survives him along with their three sons, Ted (Eva) Southland of Florida, Kip (Lisa) Southland of Roosevelt Park, Scot (Steffanie) Southland of Roosevelt Park; 6 grandchildren, Ashley, Taylor, Brooke, Drew, Jake, and Mayson; brothers and sisters, Jack (Ellen) Southland of Twin Lake, Jean (Max) Wierengo of Muskegon, William (Carla) Southland of Muskegon, Gloria (Keith) Shrum of Norton Shores; brother-in-law, Rev. Dr. Gordon Laman of Holland; sister-in-law, Diane Scott of Roosevelt Park; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Daniel Southland; and one sister, Evon Laman. Phil was known for his easy going nature, his Hollywood smile, and his very positive attitude. According to his wishes there will be no formal service, “ Just A Going Away Party” to be held at Bent Pine Golf Club at a later date.
