Dear Sue and Family,
Sending you my deepest sympathies in the passing of your dear sweet mom. I was deeply saddened to read about it this past week. Artell was always so welcoming and kind to all she knew and no one was ever a stranger. I always appreciated how kind she was to me and I will never forget her awesome cooking! And I could never forget the times Sue and I would eat those jars of canned vegetables and they were so hot my face felt on fire. The only thing that would quench my thirst was huge glasses of Coke! So glad I ran into Artell at one of the Crop Walk's a year or so ago. She had looked great and I was so happy to see her again! Again-please know that you all are in my thoughts and prayers during this sad time. I will always be grateful to have known Artell...she was a very special person and we were all blessed to have known her. God bless you Artell.

Artel was my cousin, so for many years we shared family events, a common history, as well as stories and memories. However, over the years we became friends, also, and neighbors in Roosevelt Park. How fortunate I am to have known this unselfish, happy person! She could always laugh, especially at herself, even about her painful arthritis, and when faced with personal loss or difficult circumstances she didn’t complain.Her generosity toward others was remarkable. Our last visit, while she was in hospice care, was like all visits with Artel - nothing maudlin, just gratitude at being together again, happiness for being in a lovely place, acceptance of the inevitable outcome, and plenty of laughter. What a role model for each of us! Her family has given her the highest compliment by paying her back with wonderful kindness and care over many years. She loved you so much, and you loved her well in return. Although I can’t be with you today, I wish each of you peace at this time, and good memories for your lifetime. When Artel knew her time was near to be with our dear Lord, she called me to say goodbye her concern was for me not herself and with Artel that is how it always has been family and friends first. We have always been close and I will miss her. In reading the guestbook nothing I can add that has not already been said about the most awesome lady I have ever known. May she rest in peace. There is a line in an old gospel song that says, "if I can help somebody along the way, then my living shall not be in vain". Artel, your living was certainly not in vain. If you knew Artell, you know that she lived a loving, kind and generous life. She truly found pleasure in giving of her time and many talents at Our Lady of Grace, The American Red Cross, Kitchen of Hope and basically, anywhere there was a need. She continued to put others first until her last days.

If you REALLY knew Artell, you also know that she loved to have fun in most any way shape or form. Usually, it involved family, friends, food, games, cards and lots and lots of laughter and a little more food. Her legacy already lives on in so many of us who make and share some of her recipes. Showers, parties, holidays and any gathering were always filled with laughter, love and all of her wonderful candy, cookies, desserts and dishes. She loved Card Day, Club, Monday breakfast, family reunions, cribbage her “Gems” and her girlfriends.

She loved unconditionally and was so very proud of each of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She truely was one of a kind and our world will never be the same without her.

Dear Mark, Connie, David, Jane, Sue, Kathleen, Bruce, Kathy, David, Linda, and Rose,

The death of your dear mother, Artel, leaves me with deep sadness to the loss of a precious cousin whom I enjoyed and had much fun with as often as we could work out times to be together. She brought me into many of your family events and shared her life in many kind and gracious ways so we could stay connected as cousins. For that I am grateful. Now I rejoice that she is absent from the body and present with the Lord.

I won't be able to attend the funeral service, but I will be thinking of each one of you Friday, and praying for God's peace to soothe and comfort you as you gather to celebrate her life and release her body to the earth.
