Raymond W. Smith, Sr.'s Obituary
Mr. Raymond W. Smith, Sr. age 83, died Friday, February 27, 2004 in Muskegon. He was born on September 14, 1920 in Muskegon to Hubert H. & Ida C. (Schmidt) Smith, and had resided in Muskegon his entire life. Mr. Smith had worked at the family owned Hubert H. Smith Meat Packing Company for over 50 years, before retiring in 1992. He was a former communicant member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, and a board member at St. Joseph’s Credit Union, and St. Joseph’s Holy Name. He was a current member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church. Mr. Smith was a Veteran of the United States Army having served during World War II, and avid athletic supporter of all Muskegon Catholic Central events. On August 23, 1947, he married the former Ruth K. Doppel, and she survives him along with 4 children, Mary Ellen (William) Barry of New Hampshire and their son, William Barry; Raymond W. (Kathie) Smith Jr. of Portage, MI and their children, Jennifer, Megan (Tom) Bradshaw, and Matthew Smith; Daniel J. (Jeanne) Smith of Mason, MI and their children, Aaron, Erica, and Adam Smith; and Elizabeth Ruth (William) Rothwell of Troy, MI and their children, Lindsay, William, and Michelle Rothwell; 1 brother, Louis V. (Angela) Smith of Muskegon; 2 sisters, Catherine Bolduc and Margaret Larson, both of Muskegon. Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his parents, Hubert H. and Ida; and 3 brothers, Nicholas J. Smith, Joseph A. Smith, and Hubert F. Smith. THE MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL will be 11:30 AM Tuesday at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, with Rev. Fr. Phillip Sliwinski presiding. VISITATION with the family will be today (Monday) from 2-4 & 6-8 PM at The Walburn Chapel, Sytsema Funeral Homes, Inc. 1547 W. Sherman Blvd. with a Scripture Service at 7:30 PM. Burial will take place in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Memorial Contributions to Muskegon County Catholic Education Foundation will be appreciated.
