Richard W. Wilkey's Obituary
Richard Whitney Wilkey, age 92, passed away on Monday, October 6, 2025, in Muskegon, MI. He was born in Dearborn, MI, to Harland and Christena (Sumic) Wilkey on August 25, 1933. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War era as a member of the elite Underwater Demolition Team 21 (UDT-21) – the legendary “frogmen” who later became known as the Navy SEALs. Though he was not deployed to active combat, his service demanded exceptional discipline, teamwork, and physical endurance. The values he learned during that time – commitment, perseverance, and hard work – remained with him throughout his life and shaped the man he became. Following his time in the service he married the former Patricia McQuat on July 11, 1964, and the two of them spent 59 wonderful years together prior to her passing in 2023. Richard owned and operated the Jewel Box jewelry store in Muskegon for many years, and more recently he worked as a sales associate at the Home Depot in Grand Haven. In his younger years he enjoyed golfing and watching Muskegon hockey teams. Richard was a well-loved, friendly, hard-working man who will be missed by all who knew him.
Richard will be lovingly remembered by his three children: Maryl McKee, Debbie Cholka, and Chris Zadel; five grandchildren: Stacy (Chris) Ulrich, Stephen (Caitlin) Zadel, Lauretta Zadel, Amber McKee, Keith Koons; and four great-grandchildren: Elyse Ulrich, Blakely Ulrich, Grayson Ulrich, and Leo Zadel. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Patricia.
Per Richard’s wishes no public services are being held at this time. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation. Arrangements entrusted to The Walburn Chapel of Sytsema Funeral & Cremation Services, 1547 W. Sherman Blvd, Muskegon, MI, 49441.
