Robert Manley Burleigh's Obituary
Robert Burleigh died Monday, January 12, at the age of 90. He lived a rich life. Born and raised in Chicago, Bob lived there for many years before moving to Grand Haven in 2008. Bob was a poet and children’s book author and published more than 50 children’s picture books. He received many accolades for his work, including being honored with the Illinois Prairie State Award for excellence in writing for children in 2011.
Bob was also a prolific artist. Under the art name Burleigh Kronquist (his mother’s maiden name), his art was shown in galleries in Chicago, New York City, and other places across the country.
Music was integral to his life. He especially enjoyed the improvisational nature of jazz, wrote songs, and played piano for fun. Bob embraced creativity in all its forms and called it “serious play.”
An ethical humanist who believed in tolerance and equality, Bob had a deep connection to Nature and a keen sense of social justice. He will be deeply missed by his wife, Jenny Roberts, his children, Nina (Erik Freeland), Mark (Julie Swift), and Julie, his grandchildren, and his extended family and friends.
A memorial service will be planned at a later date. Arrangements entrusted to the VanZantwick Chapel of Sytsema Funeral & Cremation Services, 620 Washington Ave., Grand Haven, MI 49417. Share memories with the family at their online guest book at https://www.sytsemafh.com.
