I was appointed to serve Westgate UMC in 2004. I learned that Roy served that church during a very difficult time. He did particularly hard work of ministry while there. I called him, as I had heard of his time from then secretary, Pat Benninger. Roy was helpful and consultative, and I appreciated our conversation and his generosity of time and wisdom as I continued to serve in that place. Ruth, We are sooo sorry for your loss. We wish we could have visited with you while in Dayton, but are grateful we were able to speak with Roy and you 2 weeks before he died. Our family memories of you, as neighbors but, more importantly, as friends will last forever. Angela remembers playing on the tire swing and sledding on your little hill. I remember Jennifer telling me at 4 years old, she was going over to help "Osborn", now her adult pet name is Mr. "O". We enjoyed our weekend visits with you when Tom and Jen would go out in the boat with Roy while you and I sat and talked all while they were gone and will cherish those times most. He was a wonderful man, always telling us he wanted to get you near family as he was growing older. And he accomplished that. The challenges you have faced over the years, Ruth, make you the very special person that he loved and cherished. Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this time. Love, Mary & Tom DeMange

Roy was a chaplain colleague of mine in Columbus, Ohio, in the 1970's, and was my commanding officer in the Chaplain Company at the Naval & Marine Corps Reserve Center. He was an effective chaplain, and a gentleman, with a nice sense of humor. For example, he picked me up one time on the way to drill and as we started off in his car he said, "Let's see what's on the radio." As soon as he turned it on, out came "Anchors Aweigh." I said, "Well, what a coincidence that should happen to be broadcast just at the moment we start of the Naval Reserve Center!" Roy then confessed, "That's a cassette tape, and I had it cued up all ready to go when we got rolling." We both got a good laugh out of it. I felt honored that he nominated me to succeed him as commanding officer of that Chaplain Company when his tenure was up, and we stayed in touch in the years since then, even though our paths diverged. I will miss Roy, and I offer my condolences to Ruth and all his family.
