Sheila Anne Mogren's Obituary
Mrs. Sheila Anne Mogren, age 76, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 25, 2025 following a 9-month battle with cancer. She was born in Muskegon, Michigan on July 25, 1948 graduating from Muskegon High School in 1966 where she played in the marching and concert bands.
It was in band class where Sheila first noticed a young man from North Muskegon, William Mogren, who would later take her flying for their first date. The two fell in love and were married on May 8, 1971. After graduating from Western Michigan University with a degree in Education, Sheila taught at Angell School before dedicating herself full-time to raising her four children. She then spent over 20 years substitute teaching, primarily at North Muskegon. Sheila enjoyed an active lifestyle, pursuing hobbies like painting, shopping, and decorating her home, and given her talents in that area, she was often asked by others for assistance. She loved to travel which included European tours and especially enjoyed road trips with her husband Bill to visit their children and to explore favorite destinations in northern Michigan, including Mackinac Island stays at the Grand Hotel.
A devout Christian, Sheila was a longtime member of Christ Church in North Muskegon and previously Bethany Christian Reformed Church. Her unwavering faith was a source of great joy for her, spending over 30 years teaching Sunday School and volunteering with the Good News Club for Child Evangelism. Sheila was known among her friends and family as a truly kind-hearted person, a trait which she also extended to anyone she met.
She was also a community leader, a friend to all and had a love for cats, especially strays. She is survived by her husband of 53 years, William John Mogren; four children, Nathan (Emily) Mogren, Jill (Chris) McDougall of Atlanta, John Mogren, and Katherine (Brent) Zavitz of Clarendon Hills, Illinois; seven grandchildren, Gunnar, Annika, and Axel Mogren, Caroline and Katherine McDougall, and Genevieve and Margaret Zavitz; half siblings, Dawn, Brian, Denise and Vicki as well as many loving nieces, nephews, and extended family. Sheila was preceded in death by her parents, John and Betty Farrell. SERVICES will be held 11:00 AM Friday, January 31, 2025 at Christ Church (1910 Ruddiman Dr., North Muskegon, MI 49445). VISITATION with her family will be one hour prior to her service. Burial will be in Laketon Township Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Child Evangelism of Muskegon.
