This is What My Mom Was All About
Alias: Auntie Paul, Ma, Grandmother, and Grandma Pauline.
Mom prayed every morning and every night for each of us asking the Lord to protect us from harm and to guide us in the Lords way. She taught us what unconditional love was. No matter how bad we messed up – she still loved us, no matter what! She was always very opinionated on how you dressed, hair styles, etc., but bottom line was she loved us all unconditionally. She accepted us all for what we were and what we did!
It was a tremendous gift and opportunity for Jan and I to have Mom living at our house for this last year. It really gave us an opportunity for our love to grow stronger for her and for her to better know her grandchildren and their families. Jan also learned some great phrases like “that’s a royal cramp.”
I will never forget the Saturday night Jan and I were babysitting our granddaughter Hailey. Grandma Pauline and Hailey were trying to play dominos, Jan asked Hailey to do something for her and Hailey stated, I can’t because I am arguing with Grandma Pauline. They were arguing over a game of dominos –the rules of the game! You see they are both cut from the same cloth. Grandma Pauline had her way of playing the game and Hailey had her way of playing the game and neither one was willing to change their way of playing! And when it came to the two of them making cookies together it was the same they both wanted to be in charge.
One thing the two of them finally agreed upon was they both liked a particular tea. Hailey likes tea—but she loved having tea parties. And we know Ma has always loved her tea. This is one game Grandma Pauline and Hailey both loved! Putting on the funny hats, choosing a new name different from their own, speaking in a different language, picking the perfect tea for the day and having a cookie or two was fun. Pauline was fond of Pat’s cowboy hat and Hailey loved the red hat with a flower. But most of all they love having this party together.
After dinner on Sunday night, January 13th Hailey wanted to have some tea so Jan and Hailey gathered together the tea cups, heated the water for the tea and put it in the teapot for Lynn, Heather, Kim, Jan and herself. Hailey selected her perfect tea-the kind that turns red in the water, then gave each a tea bag and poured their hot water. Then as they did in so many tea parties before they selected their party names. Hailey selected Pauline, and Jan quickly said how about picking a name that was a flower instead, so she selected Violet. All the girls lifted their cups of tea to toast Grandma Pauline and clinked their cups together. At this point in time Hailey tasted her tea and said I don’t like my tea, and asked if she could dump it out and get a different tea and Jan said sure. Hailey came back with some “Red Rose” tea. She never before liked “Red Rose” tea even with sugar and milk. Hailey made herself another cup, tasted it then announced, “This is my favorite tea!” Then she raised her teacup and stated Grandma Pauline is in heaven celebrating now with all of her family and friends there. Grandma Pauline will live forever in our hearts in a special place and she will always watch over us from the stars!
Even though they both had different rules of the game they both gave each other unconditional love and they loved spending their time together!
We were really blessed to have a Mom who spent this last year with us, and we know she enjoyed helping us canning plums or string beans, making cookies, the Christmas rolls or even peanut brittle, but most of all she enjoyed the simple times shared with her family.
We’ll carry those special times shared in our special places reserved just for her. Her thoughtfulness came from the heart. She instinctively knew, “It’s not what you have but what you share.” It truly filled our hearts to hear that she considered our house her home.
We’ll always know we had her unconditional love. We will miss you Mom.
Love,
Pat and Jan.##imported-begin##
