William M. "Bill" Schugars' Obituary
With broken hearts we announce the death of our outstanding father and grandfather, William Merton Schugars. He passed away peacefully at home on Friday, November 6, 2020, surrounded by his children. Bill had a positive impact on everyone he met because he contained a genuine heart of gold. He was a loving and devoted husband, supportive and kind family member, and a reliable and honest friend. Never has there been a more virtuous gentleman, with such a positive energy and the sweetest of souls. Whenever asked about his day, he would often reply, “Every day is a great day, but some are better than others”. Quite simply, he was a treasure. Bill was an enthusiast of automobiles and trains from an early age. He read extensively about these hobbies and was a wealth of knowledge. He had a lifetime career in the automotive industry as a small business owner and parts manager. He proudly served in the U.S. Army Reserves and was also a man of Christian faith who looked forward to worship and praise with the congregation of Fifth Reformed Church. William Merton Schugars was born March 2, 1937 in Muskegon to Merton and Helen (Poslusny) Schugars. On August 13, 1960 he married his “Tse Tsa”, Janet C. VanderSlute who preceded him in death in 2017. He was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Hannah Schugars; 2 brothers: Donald and Kenneth Schugars. SURVIVORS include 4 children: Scott (Kim) Schugars of Muskegon, Suzanne (Frank) Eaton of Crown Point, IN, Shelley (Tim) Shifman of Grove City, OH, and Stacey (Eric) Laszlo of Indianapolis, IN; 8 grandchildren: Matthew (Kristina) Donlin, Stephanie (Ryan) Weiss, Samantha (Ryan) Racicot, Adam (Kristin) Shifman, Danielle Schugars, Billy Schugars, Sydney and Tessa Laszlo; brother, Phillip Schugars of Muskegon; and many nieces and nephews. A private family graveside service will be held at Hilton Cemetery in Casnovia Twp. officiated by Pastor Scott VanArendonk. MEMORIALS to the Alzheimer’s Association will be appreciated.
